The BANDAS Center deals with technologies that are used for very large, heterogeneous and volatile data volumes (big data). The basis of such data-based technologies can be classical statistical approaches or information systems as well as methods of machine learning and artificial intelligence. The central focus of the Center is on the design of these technologies and their transformation potential for organizations and society. In the spirit of design science research, prototypes for practical problems are developed and evaluated in relation to organizations or society.
With regard to organizations, research is being conducted into how data-based technologies can be used as effectively as possible in practice. This means that the transformation of business processes, working practices and roles is examined, as well as the potential for new business models and innovations. The findings from these studies are incorporated into the design and conception of data-based technologies, for example via design guidelines.
In relation to society, we investigate how data-based technologies change power relations, social practice and practices and how (changing) social values, ideas and norms affect technology development and which design requirements result from this.
Both research perspectives take into account the influence of ethical and regulatory frameworks. In their design orientation, both research perspectives combine the use of data science methods and current technologies.
